So you're thinking of creating a website and just don't know where to start.  Well you've come to the right place.  Code It All is dedicated towards making your web design experience simple and fun.

What is HTML?

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language.  This is the language that is used to describe the structure of a website.  Here you will learn all about the HTML language and will be able to develop sites using your knowledge.

What is a URL?

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator.  This is the name or address of the website you would like to visit.  The Domain Name is the sites URL.  When you type in http://www.codeitall.com you are sent to the codeitall.com address, its URL.

What is FTP?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is the way one computer connects to another through a network.  FTP in the sense of web design allows one computer to transfer information (in this case an HTML file) to the server which hosts the website.

For more information on FTP and programs that can be used to transfer files click here.

Choosing a Topic

Choosing a topic is, as you might imagine, a very difficult task.  There are many websites in existance already and the chances are most ideas you might come up with have probably already been done.  There are a few tips that might help you come up with your idea.

   - Find what you are interested in.
   - Take something you're good at and teach others.
   - Provide a service.
   - Find a way to entertain others.

Designing Your Website?

What You'll Need

1. An HTML Editor.
   - Dreamweaver
   - Notepad
   - Taco HTML Edit (for Mac)
2. Web Hosting (free, or paid)
3. FTP Uploading Program
(FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, it is used to place the pages you create on the web hosting that you choose. (Might not be necessary for some hosting sites such as the free hosting).

A Websites design depends primarily on your target audience.  For a young target audience you would use brighter colors to catch their eye and larger text because of kids tendencies to sit back further in their seats and further from the computer screen.  An older target audience you should be more professional and use more neutral colors and average sized text.

Where can I get a FREE website?

Free websites are relatively easy to come by.  They do however limit the amounts of freedom you are given when developing a website.  If you are looking to learn coding and would like to play around with HTML and other types of codes a free website is probably the best direction for you to go.

Below is a list of a few major free websites.
  - Geocities
  - 50 Megs
  - Lycos
  - Homestead

Steps to take when Purchasing a Website

Purchasing hosting for websites is a difficult task.  When searching through the numerous web hosting services available for purchase I would recommend looking around Google and comparing prices, bandwidth, web space, and support.  These although not the only things to check are the most important.  My hosting choice is GoDaddy although I am certain there are better choices available somewhere and research would be most beneficial to you.  Look for reviews of the companies before deciding because in the end if you continue to design websites your choice is where you will remain for a long time.

Below are some paid web hosting companies:

How do I get hits to my site?

Hits, probably the most difficult of all the Web design tasks.  There are many ways, free ways in fact, that can be used to gather some hits to your site.

Word of mouth is by far the best of the free ways to get hits to your website it is however extremely difficult to achieve.  In order for word of mouth to work you need a good website with valuable information and an ever changing website.  This will keep people coming back and also make them want to tell others about it.  When this is achieved it can work wonders for your websites.

Some other free solutions are as follows:
 - Get your site on google.  (more here)
 - My Link Box
 - Link Exchange with other websites similar to your own.
 - Know your target audience be able to find them and advertise to them.
 - Forums - Post comments about your site in posts relevant to your website.

You can also use some money to purchase advertising space at Google AdWords.

Other ways to get more visitors to your page is through SEO (search engine optimization).  Many sites do this for you below is one of those sites.

*NOTE: It is not recommended to use those sites that promise numerous amounts of hits for small amounts of money.  In my experience they do not work and send useless visits to your site.

Getting on Google (and other search engines)

There are two ways to get on Google (and other search engines).
1. Pay for Ad placement.
2. Exploit the system and get higher result placement.

Since number 1 is relatively self explanatory I will focus on the way of exploiting the system.  Google as well as other search engines have programs called "bots" which are used to get information from websites and use the text to find what your website is related to.  When writing information about your website I would recommend using very descriptive words about your site.  Search engines use these words to find out what are good keywords to relate to your site.

Making Money

Everyone loves making money, but is it really possible online? The answer is Yes.  Money can be made online using many different sites.  Google AdSense is a good place to start.  I'd reccommend using Google Ads on your site and finding placement nearby text and in places your visitors will see.  The more clicks you receive the more money you will make.

Improving your websites load speed

Load speed of websites is dependant on the amount of information that needs to be loaded everytime the page is arrived at by a visitor.  Ways to improve the load speed would be to use less images and or lower the size of the image which can be done by finding an image compression program.  You can also just use less images.  The fewer images that need to be loaded the quicker the page will appear.  As you might notice this website only has one image that loads.  The rest is just text.
